Segmentation of Intervertebral Discs, Trachea and Spinal Cord from MRI Images

چکیده
For preoperative planning and intraoperative support, segmentation of soft tissue structures from the cervical region is a prerequisite. Main activities have been started in the past to segment vertebrae from CT images. But soft tissue structures have been neglected. There is only little research work about segmentation of the spinal chord and the trachea, however as far as we know there is no work about segmentation of intervertebral discs. In this paper a new segmentation method is presented for cervical discs, trachea and the spinal chord. The approach implements a continuous process, which uses neighboring information and medical knowledge to accomplish automatic segmentation. Even seed points are not needed since localization of the discs is done using a generalized Hough transform and a cluster analysis. Additionally, for a complete view of the cervical region a rule based analyzer algorithm is briefly presented, which uses anatomical knowledge to find out attachment points on the surface of the cervical vertebrae.

P9: Cervical Spinal Cord Extraction in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Measuring Cross-Sectional Area
Multiple sclerosis (MS) refers to the lesions that accumulate in the brain and spinal cord. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive and versatile modality used to show changes in the tissues over time. There has been significant interest in evaluating the relationship between the brain atrophy and disease progression rather than the spinal cord atrophy. The cervical spinal cord h...
متن کاملAre magnetic resonance imaging or radiographic findings correlated with clinical prognosis in spinal cord neuropathy?
Dogs presented to the Small Animal Hospital of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tehran were included in the present study if spinal or intervertebral disc involvement was suspected. Clinical signs were recorded as well as general information of the patient such as age, breed and sex. Sixty dogs were examined radiographically and two standard orthogonal lateral and ventrodorsal projections wer...

Background context: Intramedullary signal intensity changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in cervical spondylotic myelopathy are thought to be indicative of the prognosis. However, the prognostic significance of signal intensity changes remains controversial. Purpose: To determine the radiographic and clinical factors that correlate with the prognosis after surgery in patients with cervic...
متن کاملAtlas-Free Cervical Spinal Cord Segmentation on Midsagittal T2-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Images
An automatic atlas-free method for segmenting the cervical spinal cord on midsagittal T2-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI) is presented. Pertinent anatomical knowledge is transformed into constraints employed at different stages of the algorithm. After picking up the midsagittal image, the spinal cord is detected using expectation maximization and dynamic programming (DP). Using DP, the ...
متن کاملA method of localization and segmentation of intervertebral discs in spine MRI based on Gabor filter bank.
BACKGROUND Spine magnetic resonance image (MRI) plays a very important role in the diagnosis of various spinal diseases, such as disc degeneration, scoliosis, and osteoporosis. Accurate localization and segmentation of the intervertebral disc (IVD) in spine MRI can help accelerate the diagnosis time and assist in the treatment by providing quantitative parameters. In this paper, a method based ...
